ALS 3203 - Lesson 4
Inserting Special Characters into Documents

Use the Character Map web page, and the ANSI/ASCII web pages for help and information about creating special characters in a document. Here is a default character set from a Windows XP computer when charmap is loaded. Your computer may load a different set. In this example the registration ® symbol has been selected.

Charmap (ARIAL) from an XP SP2 Computer

Notice the last box here -

These are the keystrokes you would use to insert this character into a document from the NUMERIC keypad. Of course you may use select, copy, and paste with the same results.

An important tip for you to keep in mind:

EVERY SPACE ON A PAGE HAS A DEFAULT FONT ASSIGNED TO IT!!!!! THEREFORE, IF YOU WANT TO ADD A DIFFERENT CHARACTER THAT IS NOT IN YOUR DEFAULT TEXT FONT YOU MUST BE SURE TO SELECT THE SINGLE SPACE(S) YOU WISH TO CHANGE, THEN RETURN TO YOUR DEFAULT FONT IN THE NEXT SPACE IN ORDER TO NOT HAVE YOUR REMAINING DOCUMENT TAKE ON THE FONT OF THE ADDED CHARACTER. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN YOUR DOCUMENT TURN TO A BIZARRE FONT WHEN YOU TRIED TO ADD A SPECIAL CHARACTER???? THINK ABOUT IT!!!
