Selecting the Proper Type of Graph

When confronted with data for graphing, a primary consideration is the "best" type of graph to use. (Assumimg you already know the message you wish to convey to your audience). As an example, look at the following data set and associated graphs. Very few people stop to consider the most appropriate graph to best display the message of your data.

Now you have something to think about when you graph your data. The computer application you use to graph data will create whatever graph type you choose and will not indicate how appropriate or inappropriate your choice really is. Now look at another example.
